I recently wrote about how it can help your site to have a custom 404 page.
Here's a fun test to see which of two 404 pages works better. It's always nice to see the results of testing, but of course, YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). No matter what works for other people, you should always test to see what works best for your site.
I enjoy the weekly tests at WhichTestWon.com, so I signed up to get notified when they post a new one. You might also find one of their free PDF reports about testing to be of interest.
Mike,
I've been following your posts and your regular (and not so regular) commentators for about a year now, and I'd just like to say thanks to you all for the excellent advice and tips and recommendations etc that you all post almost daily. I've noted significant positive feedback in my (small) winery project ever since I started reading (and implementing!) your advice! Marketing of one's product has to be number one priority. Quality production is also necessary (but not sufficient) in this day and age, no?

Thanks for the nice words, Fabius. I'm glad you find my posts useful.
My old boss used to sale that there were only two essential parts of a business: sales and production. Everything else is overhead. Like most technicians, winemakers are focused on the production side of the business. But you gotta sell it, too.
