This is one small way in which you let site visitors know that the site has been updated sometime since the turn of the millennium.
Obviously, this can be a pain if you've got to edit every page on your site. If you want to avoid that pain next year (as well as have a site that's easy to update), consider moving to a template-driven content management system.
Freshness counts on the Web. I encourage you to plan how you'll update your home page each month of the coming year.
